Bee swarms are a natural phenomenon which usually happen in Scotland between May and July. They can look and sound quite scary but they’re actually harmless. When a colony becomes too large for their home they split and the Queen along with possibly thousands of daughters move to a new home. It can take a few days to get to their chosen new location and on the way the swarm will make rest stops. This is when you will usually hear or see the swarm. Often they will form a single football sized cluster and settle for a few hours before moving on.

Please do not attempt to move the cluster yourself or destroy it. Our bees are in decline and we’re here to do everything we can to help them thrive.

Things you can do to help the bees and stay safe:

  • don’t panic

  • keep windows and doors closed - there may be bees flying around

  • keep children and pets away from the bees

  • if you can safely manage then please take photographs you can text to us so we can bring the correct equipment with us

What we will do:

  • assess the situation and advise

  • whenever possible attend and collect the bees into a temporary transportation hive

  • place the colony in a permanent beehive in one of our local apiaries

  • care for the bees for the future

  • post an update on your swarm on our social media pages

Please be aware that we may have to return at dusk to retrieve the temporary hive to ensure we have all of the flying bees inside. We may have to trim foliage to reach the bees which we will discuss with you in advance.

We can only rescue honeybee swarms and NOT bumblebee nests. Bumblebees are amazing and if you have them in your garden then lucky you! Bumbles will usually only stay for a few weeks then once all their young hatch they will all disperse and you can fill any holes etc. You can find out more about bumble and solitary bees by visiting The Bumblebee Conservation Trust. We cannot remove bees that are inside chimneys or wall cavities at a high level but can provide advice.
